April 2nd, 2014

I just returned from a wonderful vacation with my husband Will and dog Guido. We took a road trip from California to Arizona to Colorado, staying in new and familiar places along the way. During our time in the Denver-Boulder area, we saw the after effects from the flooding and mudslides that damaged and destroyed more than 18,000 homes and businesses last September. We heard heartbreaking stories about loss of life and property. Yet we also heard heartwarming stories of dramatic rescues and ongoing recovery. As we took it all in, I kept hearing God’s voice through the prophet Isaiah’s words: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.” The people and communities in that area have been through a lot. Yet there are signs of resurrection in their midst. Lutheran Disaster Response is one such sign as they continue the long-term recovery work to provide not only physical assistance but also spiritual and emotional care.

As we continue our 40 Day journey through Lent, we are soon approaching the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. At the heart of our faith is the promise that no matter how high the waters rise and threaten to engulf us, they will not overwhelm us. We are Easter people. We trust that God is with us and just as God raised Jesus, God will raise us too.

May each of us now recommit ourselves to the challenge we made at the beginning of this Lenten season to deepen our relationship to God and one another through worship, learning, service, prayer and fasting, so that we might yearn and see those signs of new life—even in the midst of despair—that God continues to graciously give us.
