A Message from Pastor

September 24th, 2012

With the start of a new school year I’ve been humming this hymn in my head: “Classrooms and labs! Loud boiling test tubes! Sing to the Lord a new song….Knowledge and truth! Loud sounding wisdom! Sing to the Lord a new song! God has done marvelous things. I too sing praises with a new song!”(Earth and All Stars, ELW 731). We’ll be singing that song together in worship on Rally Sunday, Sept. 9th when we have our “Blessing of Backpacks” for all the students in our congregation as they pursue another year of learning. That day also marks the beginning of a new year of Sunday School for children through 6th grade. God has indeed done marvelous things with the faithful group of adults who have stepped forward to be part of a rotating teaching team this fall, and we thank them for nurturing the faith of our children through their service.

This fall marks a “new song” for those in 7th-12th grades as we join with Salem Lutheran in Glendale for Confirmation and Youth Group on Sunday nights two orthree times a month from 6:45-8pm. We look forward to this new partnership with increased opportunities for our youth in learning, service and fellowship activities.

Adults also need faith nurturing as learning is a life-long process. Through its Book of Faith initiative and new Bible Study curriculum, our ELCA is encouraging greater biblical literacy and fluency among its members for the sake of the world. We will be starting  a new Adult Study on Wednesdays  at 7pm using one of these new resources, “The Greatest Story,” an overview of the entire Bible. From Sept. 19-Nov. 14th we will focus on the Old Testament. After the holidays we will turn to the New Testament.

This congregation has a long history of supporting learning as American Lutheran Elementary School provided quality education and Christian growth for over 60 years. Six years after the school’s closure in 2006, our Education Unit will once again be used to teach children and youth as we lease our facilities to Brighton Hall, a K-12 College Prep School for young professionals. Classes begin on Sept. 10th and we hope this will be the beginning of a new partnership in service to the wider community.

God has done, and God is doing, marvelous things in our midst! Keep reading inside this newsletter to see how God is working in our midst, so that you can add your voice by saying “I too sing praises with a new song!”
